Nigerians Oppose Third Term Question
Special to the NNPA from GIN

A majority of Nigerian delegates have countered a move to enable the president and governors seek third terms in office.
Various Nigerian interest groups debated the action in recent hearings. President Obasanjo has not yet stated if he wants to remain in office. He recently said he was looking forward to retiring to his chicken farm.
However, constant speculation remains that Obasanjo will attempt to change the West African nation constitution when his second term expires next year.
The question is also dividing Nigeria along regional lines, with delegates from Obasanjo home region in the southwest of the country in favor of the move. Officials from the north are lobbying strongly against the measure, even boycotting the recent hearings.
Of the more than 100 amendments that have been proposed to the constitution, the third term issue has generated the most controversy.
Another sensitive question is dividing natural recourses between the federal government and the regional states’in the oil-rich Niger Delta region.
