City Seeks Renovation of Howard Theatre

WASHINGTON (NNPA) - "As part of the development framework for a cultural ''destination district'' with Washington, D.C.'s greater Shaw-U Street corridor, the District government recently announced a request for proposal to renovate and restore the historic Howard Theatre. Dubbed the ''Duke Project,'' the development outlines a series of opportunities for the surrounding neighborhoods which are ''mixed socially, economically and culturally.''
Although supporters of Howard Theatre's redevelopment are hopeful for the historic landmark's overdue renovation, they are fearful that the District may award the contract to a development company who has no sensitivity to the theater's history. This lack of sensitivity may cause these developers to erase Howard Theatre's legacy.
